Migration to FreeBSD 14: re-pimping the server setup

26 February, 2024 — Vincent Bonnevialle / @Lateralux
Well, I had accumulated a bit of mess on the server, so I'm cleaning it up and starting fresh on a small VPS at Vultr (6€/month). Issue: they block port 25, which caught me off guard for mail delivery. Wait & see.

Meanwhile, I've tidied everything up into jails on FreeBSD 14, with the network configuration sorted out.

Bastille is incredibly handy for management. A little nginx proxy up front and we're good to go. One jail per service and app, everyone's happy.

However, I'll need to set up the VPN on the host again, as before, or find a workaround. Apparently, the Wireguard module should do the trick.

Let's be honest FreeBSD is really well designed, rock solid. I've been using it seriously in prod on my personal servers and VPSes for 2 years now (I've given up on the desktop, mainly because of the audio part which I didn't master well). And in the end... more than 20 years of tinkering with it. Quite an evolution. This version 14 is impeccable.
